1956 John Davies runs in the Whitsun British Games International 800m at White City

19 May, 1956. Turning up at the request of Jack Crump to act as the "reserve runner", John (pictured second from right) found to his horror that he was going to have to race. He ended up 5th in a Club Record of 1:52.3. World Record holder Roger Moens of Belgium (fourth from left) was the winner in 1:49.7 with Brian Hewson (far right) in 2nd, 1:49.8. Immediately outside John in the picture above is Lajos Szentgáli of Hungary, the reigning European Champion, who was 3rd in 1:51.2.
