1951 Southern London-Brighton Relay. Bill Lucas is handed the baton by the Mayor of Mitcham
October 6th, Mitcham Common. This was during the period when the relay started from Mitcham and consisted of ten stages. Alderman G.R. Madgwick, Mayor of Mitcham, hands Bill Lucas the baton containing a message for the Mayor of Brighton. Bill was 4th at the conclusion of the opening stage, 23 seconds down on the leaders, but equilibrium was restored by the time Madeira Drive, Brighton, was reached with Jack Brown setting the day's fastest 10th stage to bring the Bels home 1st.
